Corticosteroids have formed an important part of the transplant immunosuppressive armory since the early days of renal transplantation. Even today, they remain a useful agent for induction and maintenance immunosuppression and are the first-line of treatment for acute rejection. The plethora of side-effects, particularly at higher doses, has led to much interest in regimens that avoid or withdraw of steroids following renal transplantation.
