The genes encoding Nav1.1 (SCN1A) and Nav1.2 (SCN2A) are clustered together on chromosome 2 in both mouse and human, whereas the gene encoding Nav1.6 (SCN8A) is located on chromosome 15 in mouse and chromosome 12 in human (Litt et al., 1989; Malo et al., 1991, 1994; Plummer et al., 1998). Although the amino acid sequence of Nav1.6 is >84% identical to the sequences of Nav1.1 and Nav1.2, it is more distant from those two than they are to each other (Goldin et al., 2000).
