Implantation of fiducial seeds (intraprostatic markers or IPMs) into the prostate allows localization on orthogonal x-ray images or cone-beam CTs (CBCTs) (14-16). The IPMs on the planning and daily images can be aligned using rigid registration (RR).

2015, Practical Radiation OncologyCitation Excerpt :Gold fiducial markers are commonly placed in the prostate before delivery of external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) for the treatment of prostate cancer. These markers, easily seen on pretreatment kilovoltage imaging, act as a surrogate for the position of the prostate gland to allow for greater precision in treatment setup and delivery.1-6 Studies indicate that there is little migration of markers over the course of therapy, which validates their use4,7-12; however, it is unknown whether clinically significant migration of markers can occur immediately after placement.
