Opioid receptor agonists reduce brain edema in stroke
2011, Brain ResearchCitation Excerpt :Meanwhile, non-selective opioid antagonist naloxone significantly decreased water gain. Possible mechanisms of naloxone effect on OGD induced water gain are still not clear, although reports suggest several non-opioid mechanisms could be responsible, such as anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative pathways (Dunwiddie et al., 1982; Liu et al., 2000). As was expected, the effects of selective opioid agonists were reversed by a non-selective opioid antagonist naloxone, further suggesting that anti-edematous effects of the used ligands were mediated via opioid receptors.
