Abstract

Nerve growth factor, a well-known neurotrophic factor, supports the survival, differentiation and maintenance of sensory and sympathetic neurons during embryonic development and in the adult. This paper summarises the data on its involvement in peripheral nerve regeneration.

As expected, the hydrogel in PBS with collagenase showed a much higher release rate than that without collagenase possibly due to gradual collapse of the gelatin hydrogel structure by enzymatic degradation in the former (Fig. 4a). NGF has been also loaded as a target bioactive protein to support the survival and differentiation of neurons [45]. To determine the amount of released NGF, ELISA was performed using the supernatants after hydrogel incubation in PBS.
