This article reviews the present situation of forestry, analyses the environmental impacts of deforestation and evaluates the prospect of developing forestry in China. A number of facts show the ecological and economic significances of afforestation. Many examples reveal the unity of economics and ecology in the relationship between people and their environment in the long term. A series of environmental problems will gradually be tackled with the development of afforestation in China.
