2020, British Journal of AnaesthesiaCitation Excerpt :Furthermore, neonatal ethanol exposure in rodents is associated with hormonal acyclicity,93 and enhanced aggression in females94 and the appearance of female-typic sexual behaviours in males.95 Given that nearly all anaesthetic agents have either GABA agonist or NMDA antagonist properties similar to ethanol, it is possible that neonatal anaesthesia exposure can interfere with perinatal hormonal surges, and this interference may manifest behaviourally in a similar manner, for example, the emergence of sex-specific behaviours in the opposite sex (female aggression),94 the regression of sex-specific behaviours (female sexual receptivity),95 or the exacerbation of sex-specific behaviours (male aggression).96 Many important and lingering questions pertaining to sex as a biological variable in anaesthesia-induced developmental neurotoxicity await answers.
