Lateral interactions in catalyst poisoning

Abstract

We extend earlier work on poisoning (enhanced desorption) with a detailed examination of the poisoning mechanism in the context of an equilibrium description and by giving an explicit set of criteria satisfies by strong poisoning systems. It is the examination and understanding of the topological details of the phase transition surfaces that allow the determination and verification of these strong poisoning criteria. These criteria are supported by precise calculations (transfer-matrix with strip-widths of three and six) for a three-state lattice-gas with nearest-neighbor interactions on a triangular lattice, a model previously proposed as a general one for multicomponent chemi- and physisorption phenomena. Monte Carlo simulations are also used to explore the effects of longer range interactions on poisoning transitions. Although longer range interactions strongly affect the global topology of the phase transition surface, they do not destroy those features that cause strong poisoning effects and may even enhance them. These ideas are illustrated with particular emphasis on the strong poisoning system where sulfur poisons hydrogen adsorption on platinum (111).
