Abstract

An experimental program on proton-proton scattering is presently running at SIN. This article gives technical details of the instruments and equipment employed. It reviews, in particular, the SIN polarized proton beam, the large scale equipment, the LH₂ and the polarized targets, the detectors, the electronics, the on-line computer and the different basic layouts. Possibly this material could be split into separated articles. However, we find it more valuable to present here a complete picture which reflects the “state of the art”.

The nucleon facility NA at PSI
1997, Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment
The Nucleon Area (NA) at the Paul-Scherrer-Institut (PSI) was built as a multi-purpose facility for experiments with polarized or unpolarized protons or neutrons. For both kinds of nucleons the available energy ranges from about 100 MeV up to a maximum of 590 MeV. This article presents technical details of the layout of the nucleon beams and areas, the experimental arrangements, and the equipment employed. An experimental program on neutron-proton scattering is presently carried out using the NA facility at PSI. We put special emphasis on the polarized neutron beam and its use to measure the neutron-proton elastic scattering.
A polarimeter for protons

Measurement of the inclusive p-C analyzing power and cross section in the 1 GeV region and calibration of the new polarimeter POMME

We describe the polarimeter POMME, and give the results of its calibration in the region 200–1200 MeV, using the Saturne polarized proton beam. The high energy part of this domain (800–1200 MeV) was previously unexplored. Parametrizations of the inclusive p-C analyzing power and polarimeter efficiency as a function of scattering angle and incident energy are given, completing the data already available at lower energies. The optimization of proton polarimeters in this energy domain is also discussed.
Measurement of Δσ<inf>L</inf> in pp scattering between 200 and 583 MeV

The main structure around m = 2.15 GeV first observed by the Argonne group in the spin-dependent total cross section Δσ_L is confirmed in the energy range available at SIN. A simultaneous study of the scattered particles at small angles has been carried out with success and gave the spin-correlation parameter A_00kk for the pp elastic scattering and for the reaction pp → π⁺d. The contribution of the 3-body reactions to this spin-dependent total cross section has been deduced and found to be lower than the contribution of the π⁺d reaction even at 583 MeV.
Spin correlations and analyzing powers in pp → π<sup>+</sup>d between 447 and 578 MeV

The analyzing power A_n0(θ) and the spin correlation parameters A_nn(θ), A_ss(θ), A_kk(θ), A_sk(θ) have been measured in the reaction pp → π⁺d over a large angular range at 447, 496, 515, 538 and 578 MeV. The experiments were performed at SIN, using a polarized proton beam and a polarized proton target. The measured angular distributions have been fitted to phenomenological partial wave expansions in terms of Legendre polynomials and associated functions. Results have been compared with several calculations based on different theoretical models. At the lower energies, the agreement is reasonably good; however, none of the theories is able to explain all the results in a satisfactory way.
The spin-correlation coefficient A<inf>xz</inf> of the reaction pp → πd for proton energies between 500 and 600 MeV

The spin-correlation coefficient A_xz of the pp → πd reaction has been measured at SIN for 515, 542, and 582 MeV. The SIN polarized target was viewed for d-detection by two single-arm scintillator telescopes. Time-of-flight techniques and range selection were employed to reduce the background. Using our data on the differential cross section σ and on the analysing power A_y0, the complex Legendre polynomial expansion coefficients b_k = b_k^xz + ib_k^y0 for the quantity σ(A_xz + iA_y0) are compared with theoretical predictions. In addition, recent predictions of partialwave analyses are compared with our results on A_xz
