Abstract

Lateralized cerebral function in the recognition of facial stimuli was tested directly by examining patients before and after they were administered a single, unilateral electroconvulsive treatment. Functional demands imposed by the task (i.e. verbal or non-verbal) were the chief factors influencing the relative importance of the right or the left cerebral hemisphere to task performance.
