Abstract

This paper compares mercury cadmium telluride (MCT) with quantum well structures as infrared detection materials, especially for 8–14 μm. The fundamental properties and advantages related to their use in infrared techniques are described. Their limitations and disadvantages and the current state of the art are also discussed. Competition and comparison between the two systems are expected to last for a long time in view of the fundamental advantages and limitations of these materials. In addition, their potential as thermal detection material cannot be ignored.
