Abstract

Polarised neutrons have been used to solve the existing ambiguities in the chemical and magnetic structures of NiFe2O4. The results show conclusively that it has a completely inverted spinel structure with an oxygen parameter of 0.2573 ±0.0003. The observed magnetic moments at room temperature show that nickel ferrite exhibits the Neel ferrimagnetism with m( A)Fe = 4.86μB, m( B)Fe = 4.73μB and m( B)Ni = 2.22μB leading to a net moment of 2.09μB. The Debye-Waller temperature correction was determined with the constant B = 0.8 × 10-16 cm2.

In addition to proving the inverse spinel nature of nickel ferrites, Youseef et al. also determined the oxygen parameter (0.2573 ± 0.0003) and net magnetic moment (2.09 μB) for the pure nickel ferrite. The values of magnetic moment of ferric ions at A-sites (4.86 μB), ferric ions at B-sites (4.73 μB) and nickel ions at B-sites (2.22 μB) were also reported [142]. In 1984, Pavlyukhin et al. succeeded in their attempts to improve the physiochemical properties of nickel ferrites through mechanical activation.

This value is found to be changed at the NFO/PZT and NFO/PbO interfaces, as listed in Table.1. Our theoretical magnetic moment values is in good agreement with the experimental magnetic moment of 4.73μB/Fe [37] and in accordance with some other first principle studies [38,39]. It is worth mentioning that the induced magnetic moments on the interface O, Zr and Ti atoms at the NFO/ZTO interface are: 0.064, 0.05 and 0.21 μB, respectively.

Given that there are equal numbers of Fe3+ on the octahedral and tetrahedral sites, the Fe3+ magnetic moments are compensated, so the net moment is attributable mainly to the octahedral Ni2+ cations. The calculated spin magnetic moments, listed in Table 3, are consistent with this magnetic structure and are in fairly good agreement with earlier experimental [47] and theoretical values [19,48]. The calculated band gap measured from the VBM to the conduction band minimum (CBM) is 1.3 eV, somewhat larger than the gaps of 0.97, 0.99, and 1.1 eV, obtained with the DFT + U method by Fritsch and Ederer [19], Antonov et al. [48], and Sun et al. [49], respectively.
