2009, Seminars in Cancer BiologyCitation Excerpt :These results indicate that modes and sites of integration as well as the inserted nucleotide sequence, possibly promoter strength, are factors directing de novo methylation [69]. Our earlier studies on the de novo methylation of integrated Ad12 DNA and on the inverse correlation between DNA methylation and gene activity of integrated Ad12 genome segments [11,12] set the stage for a series of studies on promoter methylation and regulation of gene activity that belonged to the first of their kind in the literature [8,70–75]. Remarkably, in frog virus 3 (FV3), promoter methylation was required for full gene activity [76,77].
