2017, Brain Research BulletinCitation Excerpt :Developmental and regeneration studies indicate that NF-H, especially the phosphorylated form, stabilizes mature neuronal structure, enhances interactions with other cytoskeletal proteins, and retards axonal transport of the NFs (Nixon and Sihag 1991; Archer et al., 1994). The appearance of phosphorylated NF-H is considered a marker of mature neurons (Dahl and Bignami 1986; Hornung and Riederer, 1999), and despite the other subunits appear later in development and, phosphorylation occurs even later (Carden et al., 1987; Foster et al., 1987). Here, we evaluated the phosphorylation status of NF-H, used as marker to study neuronal plasticity, in the hippocampus of mice exposed to the tail suspension test (TST) and, the influence on cytoskeletal processes by antidepressant treatments.

Low levels of NFs are expressed in developing neurons during the dynamic growth phase of axonal and dendritic architecture with a switch to high NF levels during stabilization of the formed processes [8,9,19]. Phosphorylation of NF-H shows a close temporal relationship with synapse formation [43] and is considered a marker of mature neurons [19].
