2022, Animal BehaviourCitation Excerpt :Although comparisons of infection and cognition are scarce in wild populations, this apparent cognitive impairment is consistent with laboratory studies in model systems. Spatial learning deficits, for example, have been detected in mice (Mus musculus) with acute bacterial (Gibertini et al., 1995) or nematode infections (Kavaliers & Colwell, 1995), as well as in rats (Rattus norvegicus) dosed with proinflammatory cytokines, components of the immune system that appear to mediate sickness behaviours after pathogen activation (Oitzl et al., 1993). Likewise, acute infections impaired associative learning, nonassociative learning and memory formation in honey bees, Apis mellifera (Iqbal & Mueller, 2007; Kralj et al., 2007) as well as the ability of bumble bees, Bombus impatiens, to learn the colour of rewarding flowers (Gegear et al., 2006).
