Investigation of the protective effects of lutein on memory and learning using behavioral methods in a male rat model of Alzheimer's disease
2022, Journal of Functional FoodsCitation Excerpt :New objects are provided to assess cognitive memory in rodents, which is associated with the integrity of the hippocampus. Some studies have shown that the central cholinergic system can affect the animal's memory remembering the location of the objects (Deiana, Platt, & Riedel, 2011; Luine & Hearns, 1990), but little is known about the role of this system in detecting a new object compared to the familiar one. In this study, the cubes large in size (due to their high weight, they could not be moved when the rats were examined), of the same material, and free of any rust (because rust could be used as a visual cue for rats) were used as stimulants.
Age-associated decline in septum neuronal activation during spatial learning in homing pigeons (Columba livia)
2021, Behavioural Brain ResearchCitation Excerpt :Furthermore, the NDBb displays similar age-related degeneration as the medial septum. Neurons in the NDBb are fewer in number and reduced in size in old rodents [9,10,32], and the extent of that reduction correlates with a spatial memory impairment in the Morris water maze [10]. Given its homology to the mammalian NDBb and strong connectivity with the HF, age-related changes to the avian NDB, like the main body of the septum, may also contribute to the spatial-cognitive deficits previously reported in pigeons [11,12] and are also of interest for the present study.
Shikonin attenuates sympathetic remodeling in chronic heart failure mice via regulating miR-124

2019, International Journal of Biological MacromoleculesCitation Excerpt :Ach is the main neurotransmitter, with an essential role in both the peripheral and central nervous systems and has been shown to stimulate cholinergic functions [57]. ChAT was found to be decreased in the dentate gyrus and striatum of aged rats [58]. Excessive extracellular levels of H2O2 and peroxynitrite induce a prolonged inhibition of cholinergic neurotransmission [59].
