Ultrastructure of the serotonin innervation in mammalian central nervous system
2020, Handbook of Behavioral NeuroscienceCitation Excerpt :Pickel, Joh, Chan, and Beaudet (1984) combined tyrosine hydroxylase immunohistochemistry with the [3H]5-HT labeling to demonstrate that some of the axodendritic synapses in the parenchyma were made with catecholaminergic as well as noncatecholaminergic neurons. After combined radioautographic and immunohistochemical labeling, Armstrong, Miller, Beaudet, and Pickel (1984) also observed the presence of enkephalin-like immunoreactivity in some of the 5-HT varicosities in AP. An extensive network of 5-HT axons forms a supraependymal plexus along the walls of the cerebral ventricles (Bosler, 1980; Chan-Palay, 1976; De la Manche et al., 1981; Lorez & Richards, 1973, 1975; Richards, 1977; Richards, Lorez, & Tranzer, 1973).
Ultrastructure of the Serotonin Innervation in the Mammalian Central Nervous System
2010, Handbook of Behavioral NeuroscienceCitation Excerpt :As initially described by Fuxe and Owman (1965) with the histochemical fluorescence technique, and later confirmed by 5-HT immunohistochemistry, there is a small group of several hundred 5-HT neuronal cell bodies, located ventrally to the A2 noradrenaline cell group, in the area postrema (AP) of the rat. 5-HT axon varicosities, labeled by [3H]5-HT uptake, have also been identified in the rat AP (Armstrong et al., 1984; Pickel and Armstrong, 1984; Bouchaud and Bosler, 1986). These are located either in the parenchyma, where they frequently show axo-dendritic synaptic differentiations, or within the pericapillary and the ventricular spaces, in the form of free nerve endings.
