The plethora of PMCA isoforms: Alternative splicing and differential expression
2014, Biochimica et Biophysica Acta - Molecular Cell ResearchCitation Excerpt :The protein has 10 transmembrane domains, the N- and C-terminus are both located in the cytosol and the major protein mass is protruding into the intracellular space. The enzyme is an essential component of all mammalian plasma membranes, and in mammals four different genes encode the plasma membrane calcium pump which in humans are located on four different chromosomes, i.e. PMCA1 on 12q21–23 [19], PMCA2 on 3p25.3 [20,21], PMCA3 on Xq28 [21] and PMCA4 on 1q25–q32 [19]. Additional isoforms of the protein are produced by alternative splicing of the primary transcripts as first demonstrated by Strehler et al. [22].
Calmodulin and Ion Flux Regulation
2012, Calmodulin and Signal TransductionAtp2b1a regulates Ca2+ export during differentiation and regeneration of mechanosensory hair cells in zebrafish
2010, Cell CalciumCitation Excerpt :Each neuromast consists of a central core of mechanoreceptors and a surrounding group of several subtypes of support cells [7]. The mechanoreceptors of the lateral line are highly differentiated and transduce water current stimuli into electrical signals [8,9]. In contrast, the support cells provide cohesive support [10,11], perform secretory functions [12,13] and generate new mechanoreceptors during normal development and regeneration [14–17].
The plasma membrane Ca2+ ATPase of animal cells: Structure, function and regulation
2008, Archives of Biochemistry and BiophysicsCitation Excerpt :The property is useful in the identification of the phosphorylated PMCAs in preparations containing much higher amounts of other pumps, such as the SERCA pump: the amount of PMCA pumps usually does not exceed 0.1% of the total membrane proteins. In mammals, the PMCAs are the products of four distinct genes (ATP2B1–4), located on human chromosomal loci 12q21-q23, 3p25-p26, Xq28 and 1q25-q32 [10–13]. They are single polypeptide chains organized in 10 transmembrane domains (TM)1 and four main cytosolic domains: this topology scheme follows that experimentally established for the first time for the SERCA pump [4,5].
