Both S18 and rpS13 are very basic proteins (Chan et al., 1991; Garwood and Lepesant, 1994). Previous studies indicate that rpS13 is important for both translation initiation and elongation (Powers et al., 1988; (Boileau et al., 1983; Pohl and Wittman-Liebold, 1988; Osswald et al., 1995; Heilik and Noller, 1996; Wower et al., 1990), and can be phosphorylated by a eukaryotic protein kinase (Issinger et al., 1975).
