Abstract
Focal dystonia in instrumentalists has been recognized as an occupational disease in Germany since August 2017. It is a disease of the central nervous system, which is manifested by the loss of fine motor control during instrument playing. Focal dystonia is triggered by repetitive fine motor exercises that were performed over many years during intensive musical activity. Thereby, an instrument-specific localization of the symptoms can be observed. The body regions that are most stressed during instrument playing are most commonly affected. If the symptoms are not recognized in time, the disease can result in the end of the professional carrier as an instrumentalist.
