Does endogenous RNAi have antipathogenic features?

Abstract

It has been well documented that RNAi protects the eukaryotic genome from the molecular parasites like transposable elements and viruses. In recent years, a few reports have indicated that the small RNAs are also behind the plant immunity following invasion by bacteria, fungi and a few other phytopathogens. Thus the protective base of RNAi needs expansion to battle out most of the invasive pathogens. Here we have compiled evidences indicating protective roles of siRNAs and miRNAs against a whole variety of pathogens. The molecular bases of such protective roles are not yet clear but might soon be explored.
