Abstract

Strengthening of un-reinforced masonry (URM) to improve its seismic performance is an international research focus. This paper presents the effect of masonry strengthening using steel strips and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips on seismic performance of URM wall panels. Three single leaf panels with aspect ratio of 0.7 were constructed in the laboratory using the same type of materials and workmanship. Both CFRP and steel strips significantly improved the seismic performance compared to the un-reinforced wall panel. After analysis of test results, we found that lateral strength increase for the steel strengthened wall was less, but other seismic parameters were better than for the CFRP strengthened wall. However, both CFRP and steel strengthening of masonry were quite effective in improving overall lateral strength and ductility.
