Cyclic Perofrmance of Easy Quality (EQ) Moment Connections as an Intermediate Steel Moment Frame

Abstract

Easy Quality (EQ) moment connection, a proprietary connection in Korea, consists of the top bracket and the bottom tapered horizontal haunch to strengthen the steel beam-to-column connection. In this study, the performance of EQ moment connection was evaluated through full-scale experimental tests to provide technical insight for a potential prequalified connection detail for Intermediate Moment Frames (IMFs). The cyclic testing demonstrated that the failure of EQ system is characterized by beam lateral buckling accompanied by strength degradation between 0.03 rad and 0.04 rad drift. But the connections satisfied the acceptance criteria given in the AISC Seismic Provisions for IMF by accommodating a story drift angle of at least 0.02 rad without degrading below 80% of the plastic moment capacity. The beam-to-column CJP welds could be well protected until the end of the testing. Connection strengthening in EQ test specimens, as expected, resulted in higher stiffness, strength, and overstrength compared to the conventional moment frame test specimen with the same member sizes. It is notable that the energy dissipation of EQ specimens has demonstrated the ductile performance of the system.
