Abstract

Ever since the ultrastructure of mitochondria was revealed in the early 1950s by electron microscopy, the complexity and beauty of mitochondrial architecture has fascinated scientists. Recently, it has become clear that mitochondrial architecture, function and biogenesis are intimately connected. The discovery of the MICOS complex and several other structural proteins have opened the door to an understanding of this connection on a molecular basis.
