Investigation on Phase Equilibria of the Al-Sb-Tb Ternary System at 773 K Utilizing Rietveld Analysis

Abstract

The isothermal section of the phase diagram of the Al-Sb-Tb ternary system at 773 K was investigated mainly by means of x-ray diffraction, the Rietveld method, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) techniques. The existence of nine binary compounds AlTb2, Al2Tb3, AlTb, Al2Tb, Al3Tb, Sb3Tb5, SbTb, Sb2Tb5, and AlSb has been confirmed and no ternary compound was found. Binary compound Sb3Tb4 is unstable in the present work. The solubility of the third component, Al, in the binary compound Sb3Tb5 (Mn5Si3 type structure) was studied by SEM/EDX and the Rietveld method. Results of the experimental investigation of the Al-Sb-Tb system are compared with the integrated R-Al-Sb (R = Y, La, Pr, Nd, Dy) alloy systems and discussed.
