Abstract
There are different approaches to develop maneuverable systems that allow targeted inspection of the gastrointestinal tract and specifically of the stomach. Systems using magnetic fields generated by a handheld permanent magnet or an electromagnet for steering of a videocapsule with magnetic inclusions are most developed. Using such systems preliminary clinical studies have already been performed in healthy subjects and patients for investigation of the esophagus or the stomach. Other projects try to develop capsules that can move on legs or stimulate the intestinal wall via electrodes in order to induce contractions for propulsion of the videocapsule.
