Wireless and mobile communications have been extending beyond their fixed network infrastructure boundaries by incorporating a wide range of emerging wireless/mobile networking technologies and embedded device platforms, supporting a plurality of smart handhelds as well as surrounding objects. Broadband connectivity via wireless/mobile networking has enabled their ubiquitous access to the Internet, which completely enriches various potential of IT industries. Furthermore, these wireless and mobile communication technologies have gradually merged with cloud computing and big data paradigms, and accomplished considerable technological advances and innovative businesses. However, there are still significant research challenges in the realization of the future wireless and mobile communication systems.

In this context, this special issue aims to solicit new wireless and mobile technologies and challenges for supporting future communication systems, which necessarily span from a variety of mobile devices/objects, networking, virtualization platform, to application/service models.

We hope that this special issue will contribute to further researches in the field of wireless and mobile communication systems providing services and applications. This special issue comprising seventeen paper are focused on various aspects of future wireless and mobile communication systems and their applications. Papers were selected on the basis of their originality and fundamental ideas rather than the thoroughness of techniques deployed.
