Influence of Uncoordinated Anion-Radical TCNQ on the Photo- and Electroluminescence Properties of Eu3+ and Tb3+ Tris(Pyrazolyl)Borate Complexes

Theoretical and Experimental Chemistry Aims and scope

An Erratum to this article was published on 01 May 2015

Complexes of Eu3+ and Tb3+ with tris(3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazolyl)borate (TpPy–) of composition [Tp Py2 Ln]Tp Py and [Tp Py2 Ln]TCNQ · show metal-centered luminescence even in the presence of efficient luminescence quencher such as TCNQ as the counter-ion. The electroluminescence spectrum of an ITO/PVK/[Tp Py2 Tb]TpPy/Al (PVK = poly(9-vinyl)carbazole) device showed Tb3+ emission. When [Tp Py2 Ln]TCNQ · is used as the emitting layers presumably the emission of separate carbazole fragments of PVK was observed, which may be due to a breakdown in packing of the carbazole fragments upon the inclusion into stacks of the TCNQ anion-radicals. Very weak emission of the Tb3+ ion was detected in the LED with the [Tp Py2 Ln]TCNQ · complex.
