Coherent and bound photonic states in globular photonic crystals

Abstract

Experimental and theoretical results of studying the properties of globular photonic crystals are presented. Using a simple one-dimensional model of globular photonic crystals, we obtained the dispersion law for three photonic branches. We calculated the dependences of the group velocity and photonic effective mass on the wave vector. We showed that for photons corresponding to the photonic-branch edge, the velocity of its motion goes to zero; we call such type of photons “slowtons.” The coherent emission of slowtons can appear inside globular photonic crystals, if the energy of exciting photons outside the crystal is close to the forbidden-gap energy of such crystals. The conditions of forming the slowtonic bound states were established. The symmetry properties of such bound states differ from the properties of spare photonic states.
