Abstract

A single crystal of SmO(OH) was grown out of a high temperature lithium hydroxide melt and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. SmO(OH) crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/m with a = 4.3605(3) Å, b = 3.7725(3) Å, c = 6.1490(4) Å, and β = 108.4500(10)°. The material exhibits a three-dimensional crystal structure consisting of corner- and edge-shared SmO7 polyhedra. The samarium cation is observed in a distorted monocapped trigonal prismatic coordination environment. Two kinds of oxygen atoms are found, and these represent oxide (O2−) and hydroxide (OH) ligands, respectively.

Graphical Abstract

The synthesis and crystal structure of a new samarium oxyhydroxide, SmO(OH) is reported.
