Abstract
IR optical properties of a UV grade sapphire are reported at moderate temperatures, up to 500 °C. The spectral transmittance of the sapphire is obtained as a function of temperature and thickness. With extinction and reflection coefficients obtained by fitting the transmittance curves, the emittance and reflectance of the sapphire are calculated as a function of wavelength and thickness, showing the thickness dependence in a semi-transparent region of the sapphire. The directly measured emittances of the sapphire by a substrate heating method agreed well overall with the calculated emittances from transmittances.
