Preparation of synthetic fibers containing biologically active compounds for germanium determination by spectrophotometry

  • Published:
Fibre Chemistry Aims and scope

A method for decomposing polyamide threads and polyester fabric treated with the germanium-containing preparations Panaxel and Astrogerm-C was developed. The method extracted Ge most completely in order to determine it by spectrophotometry for subsequent development of a standard method and inclusion of it in on-line monitoring of the raw material, intermediate solutions, and finished product from manufacturing of medical materials. Methods for mineralization of the raw material and polymeric matrix by wet ashing and thermal combustion were investigated. It was found that thermal treatment of biologically active preparations resulted in significant losses of Ge. Germanium could be extracted quantitatively by chemical mineralization only with preliminary oxidation or treatment by a mixture of strong oxidizing acids (nitric, sulfuric, perchloric). Methods for mineralization of the polymeric matrix were developed. It was shown that the presence in the polymeric matrix of antimony, which is used as a catalyst for polyester production, must be taken into account in determining Ge in polyester fibers.
