Abstract

Buchholzia coriacea (Capparidacea) is used in traditional medicine in the Congo Basin to alleviate common ailments including inflammatory diseases, asthma, pain, fever, wounds, abscesses. The present investigation aims to study the bark of Buchholzia coriacea on asthma parameters in Wistar rats. The ethanol extract of Buchholzia coriacea is administered to ovalbumin sensitized rats. Leukocyte migration and infiltration of plasmatic liquid into the airways were evaluated. Moreover, the extract is tested in the isolated trachea of rat contracted with metacholine. The results show that the ethanol extract of Buchholzia coriacea (200 and 400 mg/kg) inhibited significantly the leukocyte infiltration and plasma extravasations into the airways of sensitized rats. Extract of the bark of Buchholzia coriacea, at cumulative concentrations reduces the isolated trachea previously contracted by metacholine. We conclude that the ethanol extract of the bark of Buchholzia coriacea has antiasthmatic properties. Further investigations are needed to elucidate the mechanisms of action.
