Abstract

Die Produktionszahlen von Kunststoffen sind aufgrund günstiger Produktionsverfahren und vielseitiger Einsatzmöglichkeiten in den letzten Jahrzehnten stark gestiegen. Entsprechend haben sich der zunehmende Kunststoffanteil im Alltag und seine negativen Folgen intensiviert. Ein großer Teil der entsorgten Kunststoffe gelangt auf Deponien oder unkontrolliert in die Umwelt. Dies gefährdet die maritimen Ökosysteme und kann die menschliche Gesundheit beeinträchtigen. Bestehende Lösungsansätze hinsichtlich Substitutions- und Designstrategien wirken sich auf Verbraucher, Hersteller und Regulierungsbehörden unterschiedlich aus.

Abstract

The production of plastic and other synthetics has increased in the last few decades due to its inexpensive production costs and its versatile applications. The discussion about the increasing amount of plastics in everyday life and its potential negative consequences has intensified recently. The treatment of plastics at the end oflife (EoL) is the main focus of the criticism. A large share of the plastics that are discarded end up in a landfill or as trash, littering the environment. Plastic waste has become a dramatic problem for the environment, especially maritime ecosystems, and can have dire effects on human health. Based on an analysis and review of the current plastics situation and regulatory events regarding production development, applications, overall economic relevance, negative externalities and problems with the recycling of plastics, this article examines potential solutions in substitution and design and underlines the implications for consumers, producers and regulators.
