Résumé
Introduction
Conclusion
Abstract
Introduction
In global terms, the third most frequent cancer is the colorectal cancer (CRC). The objective of this study is to describe its epidemiology.
Patients and methods
This is a retrospective study of patients having CRC over an eight-year period. Information was collected from medical notes, endoscopy records and imaging reports. We recorded age, sex, mode of clinical presentation, location of tumour, endoscopic features and histological type.
Results
Three thousand eight hundred and forty-eight colonoscopies were performed during the eight-year period. CRC was detected in 246 patients. Median age was 54 (17–90 years); 52.5% were women and 47.5% were men. Twenty-six percent of the patients were less than 40 years of age. Rectal bleeding was the commonest clinical feature. The delay in diagnosis was six months. Sixty-seven percent of the cancers were located in the rectum and 33% in the colon. Adenocarcinoma was the histological diagnosis in 92.5%.
Conclusion
CRC presents in Moroccan patients at a young age. The tumour is most commonly situated in the rectum. These data need to be confirmed by establishing a regional and national register of CRC.
