Abstract

In 2008 the Commission on Infections in Vascular Surgery (Kommission “Infektionen in der Gefäßchirurgie”) first developed and adopted clinical practice guidelines on vascular infections. Since 2009 these have been accessible via the  German Association of Scientific Medical Societies (Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Wissenschaftlichen Medizinischen Fachgesellschaften, AWMF) and the German Society of Vascular Surgery and Vascular Medicine (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Gefäßchirurgie und Gefäßmedizin,  DGG) website. It now seems that there is a need for reevaluating the evidence in the light of recent publications and data. This addendum now only offers comments and thoughts which, however, might be considered for inclusion in a later revision of the guidelines. The aim of this approach was to provide guidance as well as a platform for critical comments. The separate addendum format was chosen because this is not a new version of the guidelines. A particular focus of this addendum is on the role of antimicrobial vascular grafts in the prevention and management of vascular infections.
