Neuroendocrine Neoplasms (NENs) may arise in various abdominal organs and although considered rare, their annual incidence and prevalence have gradually increased in the last few decades. Significant scientific strides in the past few years have accelerated progress in understanding NENs. This is reflected in several recent updates by the World Health Organization in the nomenclature and pathologic classification of NENs due to distinctive genomics, epidemiology, and treatment paradigms for the different subtypes of NENs. Somatostatin receptor expression (by most of these tumors) is leveraged for diagnostic purposes in PET imaging and for therapeutic purposes in gastroenteropancreatic NETs with peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT).

This special section was assembled to summarize NEN imaging primarily by site of origin and provide a comprehensive overview of the current state-of-the-art knowledge of NEN imaging. The topics will interest those first venturing into the field and experts alike. This issue was produced by members of the Society of Abdominal Radiology’s Neuroendocrine Disease Focused Panel and the generous contributions of many other experts from the wider Society and beyond. We appreciate the unique contributions from our clinical colleagues in medical and surgical oncology, providing an exceptional learning opportunity for the multidisciplinary care of NENs. In addition, we have included papers on standard imaging protocols and radiology reporting templates based on the site of NENs.

It is our honor and privilege to serve as guest editors. We would like to thank Dr. Daniel Johnson, the Editor-in-Chief of Abdominal Radiology, for this incredible opportunity and the authors for their contributions to this special section. We hope readers will find this section as valuable and informative as we did.
