Abstract
Despite the availability of molecular biological methods, morphognostic methods for sex determination are the major tools in forensic osteology, especially in cases of poorly preserved skeletal remains. It is assumed that analysis of the pelvic bone will yield the most reliable information regarding sex of an individual and correct sexing can be achieved in up to 90% of cases. A criterion of sex determination of the skeleton is the appearance of the pelvic pre-auricular sulcus. This feature is thought to be a result of pregnancy and birth. However, as there is dispute about the cause and significance of the pre-auricular sulcus, 41 cases of known sex were investigated to elucidate whether this feature is specifically present in females who had given birth, or if it can also be observed in males and childless females.
