Summary
The suprathreshold gain of the ganglion cell to increase of intensity does not change with temporal summation from 500 msec down to 5 msec exposure time. The response functions to intensity are displaced parallel above the abscissa. The responses to equal energy products ofI×t were comparable up to 30 msec. An equation is used to describe temporal summation which is basically the same as the one applied to spatial summation in a previous paper.
Response latency measurements in spatial summation reveal that the summation over increasing area can distort a given latency at one intensity up to 90 msec. The latency is shown to be a negative function of the ganglion cells excitation.
The latter concept does not hold for temporal summation: the latency increases with longer exposure time like the response amplitude. The latency shift per unit change of stimulus duration is smaller for higher intensities than for lower ones. The latency continues to increase up to exposure times over 50 msec where the response fails to increase. The two main phenomena (1)I×t=konst. and (2) the decrease of latency with shorter exposure time can be reconciled when the elements in the retina, which first transform the step function of light intensity, are assumed to have low pass filter properties.
Temporal summation was obtained in Off-neurons as a function of pre-illumination time up to 800 msec. Latency at 5 msec exposure is minimally 25 msec longer than in On-neurons. The time course of temporal summation and the latency characteristic lead to proposal for a mechanism of the Off-response.
