Rattenseks als model voor complex seksueel gedrag van mensen

Samenvatting

Seksueel gedrag is een complex fenomeen dat beïnvloed wordt door veel verschillende factoren en sterk gereguleerd wordt door neurobiologische processen. Deze bijdrage geeft, aan de hand van een aantal actuele voorbeelden, een beeld van de translationele waarde van onderzoek bij ratten voor het bestuderen van de neurobiologische regulatie van seksueel gedrag en de verstoringen daarin bij verschillende seksuele dysfuncties. De besproken voorbeelden laten zien dat met name onderzoek naar remmende en stimulerende effecten van verschillende farmaca bij mannelijke ratten goed aansluit bij bevindingen in mensen. Bij vrouwelijke ratten corresponderen sommige farmacologische effecten goed met die bij mensen; andere doen dat echter niet. Dit is wellicht te verklaren doordat er nog niet genoeg inzicht is in welke gedragsmaten in vrouwelijke ratten representatief zijn voor vrouwelijk seksueel gedrag in mensen.
