Abstract
In this article, we highlight the contributions of Dicke to atomic physics. The effects, called Dicke narrowing and Dicke superradiance, are contained in two seminal papers published in the 1950’s. The description below should be accessible to anyone who has had a brief introduction to quantum mechanics.

Vasant Natarajan is at the Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Science. His research is in the general area of atomic physics, particularly in the areas of high-resolution laser spectroscopy, laser cooling and testing timereversal symmetry in the fundamental laws of physics. He did his PhD from MIT’s Research Laboratory of Electronics, the successor to the famous RadLab where Dicke worked during World War II.
