INS as a probe of inter-monomer angles in polymers

Abstract.

The angle between monomers in conjugated polymers plays an important role in their conductivity. The vibrational spectrum is sensitive to this angle and can be used to probe the distribution of angles in poorly crystalline systems. We show that the INS spectrum is correctly calculated for bithiophene and shows the molecule to be planar in the solid – in agreement with crystallographic measurements. Poor agreement between observed and calculated spectra in the 700-cm-1 region may be due to dynamic coupling, but this does not detract from the angle-sensitivity of the spectra.
