Abstract
Aversion thresholds for electric shock in Wistar rats were determined by presenting variable shock to one side of a two-compartment experimental chamber, and no shock to the other side. Animals treated with meprobamate (50 and 100 mg./kg., i.p.), or aspirin (125 and 250 mg./kg., p.o.) spent more time on the shock side of the chamber than did animals treated with carboxy methylcellulose placebo. These results were interpreted as indicative of an analgesic effect of meprobamate, as well as aspirin. No differences were found in motor activity as a function of drug and placebo administration.
