Summary

The progressive addition of a silicate to a very dilute barium or strontium chloride solution shows a continuous increase of the electrical conductivity with a slight break, not necessarily at the equivalent point. If the concentration of the solutions are increased a break occurs earlier in the conductance curve. This has been explained by the hydrolysis of silicates of barium or strontium in the dilute solutions. The conclusion is further supported by the analytical observations carried on the precipitates obtained by progressive addition of sodium silicate to a barium or strontium chloride. It has been found here that the proportion of silica is high when the sodium silicate is dilute but it tends to theoretical values as the concentration of sodium silicate is increased.
