Summary
A study of the competition of nitrilotriacetate (NTA) andN-methylisatin-β-amidinohydrazone (β-MIAG) in the coordination sphere of transition metal ions has been carried out by calculating the reproportionation constant which relates the stability of the mixed-ligand complex to those of the complexes formed by each ligand independently. NTA and β-MIAG are incompatible ligands, and the mixed-ligand complexes formed are less stable than either of the parent complexes. This is also supported by the change in free energy occurring during mixed-ligand complex formation. All these studies have been carried out at 30±0.5°C and μ=0.1 M NaClO4 in 50% v/v aqueous dioxan medium.
