Abstract

This paper describes a comparative analysis of the thought processes verbalized by low-ability soldiers and higher-ability college students who were trained to talk aloud while solving arithmetic word problems. We analyzed and compared the types of behaviors exhibited during problem solving, and what errors were made. The analysis was used as a basis for designing problem-solving training for the Army's Job Skills Educational Program (JSEP), which consists of remedial training in basic educational skills related to job performance. Our paper includes a discussion of research findings that led to training prescriptions, describes the problem-solving package that was developed, and presents data for a formative tryout of the training materials.
