Abstract
Among psychotherapists anxiety exists that increasingknowledge of brain and behavior relationships and increasing availability of psychotropic drugs will lead to marginalisation of psychotherapy. This fear is unwarranted. The concept ‘cause of disease’ is multi–facetted. Cerebral dysfunctions are a condition sine qua non for the occurrence of abnormal behavior and precede psychopathological phenomena. In their turn, the brain dysfunctions are induced by a series of so–called etiological factors, that is inter–individually highly variable. Etiological factors might be biological or psychological in nature, acquired or genetically determined, of recent occurrence or having affected the individual in the past. The conglomerate of etiological factors is generally of a mixed biological/psychological character. Psychotropic drugs ameliorate cerebral dysfunctions. Psychological interventions diminish psychological pressure (co–)responsible for the cerebral dysfunctions. These treatment strategies relate complementary, not antagonistically. One thus hopes for increasing biologisation and psychologisation of psychiatry.
