Summary

Symptomatic treatment of gastroesophageal reflux has recently been added to the indications of the proton pump inhibitors, lansoprazole and omeprazole. There are no comparative studies of these compounds in the literature at the recommended dosages. This comparison was carried out in the present study in terms of efficacy and safety. Four hundred sixty-two patients were included, i.e. 233 receiving 15mg of lansoprazole daily and 229 receiving 10 mg of omeprazole daily. After 28 days of therapy, pyrosis had disappeared in 90% of the lansoprazole group patients and in 84% of the the omeprazole group patients (p=0,058). The safety results were excellent whatever the treatment. In this trial, both compounds were found to be effective in this trial, although the results for lansoprazole seemed more favorable.
