Summary

Background: Anti shock trousers are widely used by American paramedics in rescues services.

Methods: In a preview article the historical development of anti shock trousers will be illuminated until to the new NP-AST (non pneumatic anti shock trousers).

Results: Indications and contraindications mentioned in the literature will be discussed.

Conclusions: Multiple injured patients especially with unstable pelvic fractures or patients with bleeding of an abdominal aneursymatic rupture could profit from the prehospital use of a NP-AST.
