Summary
A two-year study was conducted in Maine to measure the effect of three virus diseases on yield, specific gravity, and chip color, of the Katahdin and Kennebec potato varieties.
In general, leaf roll reduced yields of tubers the most. Reductions in yields caused by spindle tuber, weak virus X, and severe virus X were lower in that order. Yields of tubers from common X infected plants were the same as from healthy plants.
Tubers from virus infected Katahdin plants were significantly higher in specific gravity than tubers from healthy Katahdin plants. No differences were found in specific gravity among samples of Kennebec tubers from leaf roll, spindle tuber, or virus X plants. Tubers from infected Katahdin plants had large differences in specific gravity among the diseases.
Chip color was also influenced by virus disease infections. Leaf roll infected tubers produced the lightest colored chips. The next lighter colored chips were produced from tubers with severe virus X. Weak X infected tubers produced chips which were slightly darker in color than chips from healthy tuber or tubers infected with spindle tuber, common X, or severe X. Spindle tuber infected tubers produced chips that were lighter in color than chips from healthy tubers.
